Parents are strongly encouraged to hear their child read regularly at home. Communication about reading at home and in school is recorded in a Home-School Reading Record which is kept in the children's book bags.
Teachers often give home learning ideas to children during lessons and home learning is displayed on a Home Learning Board in every classroom. Teachers display a poster in their classroom windows, indicating the theme for the week. This can help parents to support their child in creating work based on their learning in school.
Home Learning in Reception
At the start of the Spring Term, children in the Reception Year are given a Home Learning book to support their learning. Home Learning is weekly. Every week the home learning focus will either be based on Maths or the theme being taught in school, which involves areas across the whole curriculum. Home Learning promotes thinking and discussions between parents and their child. Parents are encouraged to make comments in the Home Learning book about the learning that took place.
Home Learning in Year 1 and 2
In Years 1 and 2 home learning is weekly and a Home Learning book is provided. The home learning is based on themes being taught in school, which involves areas across the whole curriculum. This home learning often involves using literacy skills, such as non-fiction reports or book reviews.
